I love history and useless trivia! So here's a few tidbits about Thanksgiving. With this knowledge, you can boggle every ones mind while they chew their turkey!
* Abraham Lincoln was the first president to declare Thanksgiving a national holiday.
* Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving the second Monday in October.
* Ben Franklin coined the name "Tom Turkey" to mock Thomas Jefferson, who didn't want the national bird to be a turkey.
* There were only five adult women left by the time the first Thanksgiving feast took place.
* The first Thanksgiving was a three day celebration. Imagine having to hang out with the in-laws that long!
* 102 pilgrims left England on the Mayflower, the voyage took 66 days. Only 56 lived for the feast. Over 30 of the remaining were children.
* Turkeys can drown if they look up in the rain.
* The pilgrims would have eaten boiled pumpkin, no pie.
* They still thought potatoes were poisonous.
* At the feast, they ate venison, duck or goose, and lots of fish. Fish!
