Dog Drama
We didn't really have anything against dogs until we moved to Taylor. Apparently, many people here think it is perfectly fine to just let there pet dogs roam. We've lost a dozen chickens to the neighborhood dogs, and have had tools, tires and toys repeatedly marked. It's extremely annoying! Yesterday, Jason was home for lunch. He was talking on the phone with work, and as I brought him his sandwich I looked out the window into the backyard. There was a big dog, in the process of jumping into the chicken coupe. Jason has let me know in the past, (when we are driving) that saying "Oh my gosh" is not as effective as just saying "Elk!" So when I saw what was happening in the backyard, I yelled, "Dog! Chickens! Gun!" He was out the door in a flash! Luckily, for all the animals involved, no one was eaten.......or shot. Now we have to have the awkward confrontation with the neighbors, who I'm sure will deny, deny, deny, that their dog would attempt such a thing. I love the example of Chuck Rothans, a sweet old man who passed away last year. He told me about catching a neighbor's dog in the act of pulverizing his poultry. He went and got his rifle, and let the dog finish the deed. Chuck watched the dog carry the prized chicken in it's mouth, back to his (the dog's) own home. POW! Chuck took out the dog, while the chicken was still in it's mouth, and all dropped on the porch of the dog owner! I guess that wouldn't leave any room for speculation as to the who, what, why and how.

Funny stuff! I think I agree with the old man also. It's one thing if the owners would just own up to it and be responsible. But when they deny it, ya gotta do what ya gotta do!
You go girl! You just ask my mom how many dogs she has shot in her lifetime that were getting her animals, she has lost count. Once people figure out you will shoot any dog that comes onto your property especially if they are trying to get your chickens, trust me they will do something about it.Stop being so nice!!
Amy - I love it......now, here in Vanuatu the dogs and the chickens peacefully co-exist. Both chickens and dogs are EVERYWHERE...hundreds of them, literally, completely on the loose. There is no such thing as a chicken-coop. Actually, I think it works over here because the dogs are so in-bred that they don't know they can eat chickens....they just attack an occasional small pig and that does just fine.
I should have shot that dog before I left. I had many chances to do so but did not. I did eliminate the wild cat population for a short time till they got more. Anyway sucks they ate your chickens, set a trap then do the deed in a safe location like the bottom of shones in a burlap sack.
